25 year-old center fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Andrew McCutchen, signed a 6-year, $51.5 million contract this spring.

Yesterday he showed why he’s so valuable, hitting the game winning walk-off single off of the wall into deep center field – the second in as many games against the Philadelphia Phillies.

After traveling with a group of players and coaches covering their Winter Caravan, I know no other guy on the team deserved a long-term deal more than Andrew. He always makes for great images throughout the year and showed some of that in the first series of the year.

Here are some of my favorites of #22 Andrew McCutchen from the first couple games I covered…

Hallelujah! Baseball season has officially started in Pittsburgh!

I think I grow most as a photographer during the spring and summer. Shooting everyday and covering the same venue over and over pushes me to look for different pictures every game – to give the viewer something they haven’t seen in 80 other games during the season. It’s my opportunity to take chances and make images that hopefully stand out from the competition.

This year’s Opening Day game didn’t have any of the pictures last year’s did (fan running onto the field, diving catches, etc) but I was quite happy that my first remote at PNC Park worked out and captured the only scored run of the game.

I look forward to many, many more baseball games to come…

In Alexander Radulov’s first game back to the NHL in four years, I was asked to cover the game at Consol Energy Center against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Radulov, who left the NHL after the 2007-2008 season to play in his home country of Russia in the KHL. After his team, Salavat Yulayev Ufa, was knocked out of the playoffs, Alexander Radulov returned to the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2004 NHL draft.

Here are my images of the guy I’m sure many Predator’s fans are happy to see back in an NHL uniform. The entire gallery of images from the game can be seen on my archive: http://archive.wickphotography.com/

It was sad news to hear from both a fan and photography standpoint as he always made for great images but he was such a great person to have as part of the Pittsburgh community. I sure hope that the Steelers organization brings him in as a coach and mentor to the young wide receiving core in Pittsburgh.

In honor of his hard-nosed play and always great attitude for life and the game of football, I’ve posted my favorite images from the two seasons that I was lucky enough to cover him for.

Happy Retirement, Hines!

I’ve been waiting all winter to cover my first NCAA Tournament!

Ever since receiving an email from my assignment editor at Getty Images asking me to cover the second and third rounds of the NCAA Tournament, I’ve been looking forward to shooting the passion, emotion, and great action that one of the biggest events in sports, brings every year.

PITTSBURGH, PA - MARCH 15: The West Virginia Mountaineers play the Gonzaga Bulldogs during the second round of the 2012 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Consol Energy Center on March 15, 2012 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)

This year it came to my neck of the woods in Pittsburgh. Duquesne University hosted the tournament at Consol Energy Center (home of the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL team). It was a pretty cool transformation, both on the court and behind the scenes, for a venue that is typically an ice covered hockey rink.

PITTSBURGH, PA - MARCH 15: Robert Sacre #0 of the Gonzaga Bulldogs reacts after a play against the West Virginia Mountaineers during the second round of the 2012 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Consol Energy Center on March 15, 2012 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)

I can’t say enough to the crew who helped make the three days spent at the arena go so smoothly. First off, it was a pleasure working with Greg Shamus, an amazing, veteran photographer. Secondly, Joe Sargent, Pittsburgh Penguins photographer, was a big help in showing me around the venue he knows so well and offering a hand in setting up my overhead remote the day before round two began.

And last but not least, but probably the most important part of our team were our editors, Chris Chambers and Justin Heiman, as well as our runner, Abby Kraftowitz. Without them, our pictures would not have made it to the masses as efficiently and as successfully!

Even though our site did not include any major upsets, there were still plenty of great moments to go around! After six games, here are some of my favorite images from my two days covering the NCAA Tournament in Pittsburgh. Enjoy!
